SANDAG recently completed the first round of a series of workshops on the Regional Comprehensive Plan (RCP) which will serve as a smart growth blueprint for land use, transportation, environment, and public investment decisions for the San Diego region.
The seven workshops held around the region were designed to solicit input from the region's residents regarding the content of the plan. Workshops were attended by elected officials, leaders and members of advocacy groups, residents from throughout the region, students, and representatives from Mexico.
In all, nearly 500 participants attended. Just as impressive as the number of participants, were the range of their opinions on the key areas of the RCP.
Participants told us:
- The strong links between housing, jobs, transportation, and the environment need to be considered when planning for the region.
- Availability of water consistently ranked the highest among core values ranked by participants.
- There was a wide variety of suggestions regarding how to address the region's housing crisis ranging from a greater emphasis on mixed land uses, to building housing at higher densities, to better informing consumers about the home-buying process.
"The workshops were a crucial first step in creating an RCP that reflects the diversity of opinion and potential solutions in our communities," said SANDAG Executive Director Gary Gallegos.
In the coming months, SANDAG will follow up with a regionwide public opinion survey, more discussions with our elected officials, and more public involvement and communication with San Diego region residents.
