TransNet Tax Extension Proposed for November Ballot

On Friday, April 9, SANDAG Directors finalized details of the $14 billion TransNet expenditure plan that will form the foundation of a November ballot measure to extend the existing half-penny sales tax.

In November, San Diego County voters will be asked to approve a 40-year extension of the existing ½ - penny sales tax for transportation improvements for the entire region. The TransNet sales tax would generate $14 billion for transit, highway, and local road improvements.

SANDAG Chairman Ron Morrison said, “I grew up in National City and San Diego, and am willing to fight for this extension. This tax isn’t only about me and my city; it’s about us and our region. It’s time to think about the long-term transportation needs of our region.”

As drafted the TransNet extension also would support funding incentives for communities to implement smart growth development to better connect people to homes, jobs and transit.
