Mission Valley East Trolley Extension to Receive Industry Award

The Metropolitan Transit System's Mission Valley East (MVE) trolley extension will be recognized by the American Concrete Institute for its innovative engineering and design at an awards dinner on May 13. Service to the public will begin on July 10 with a special ribbon cutting ceremony slated for July 8.

First envisioned over 25 years ago, the 5.9-mile MVE extension is the final link between the Blue and Orange Trolley lines, providing San Diegans with increased mobility and easier access to popular destinations, and commercial and employment centers. San Diego State University’s the underground station will be one of four new stops on the MVE extension of the MTS Trolley. Other stations include Grantville, 70th Street , and Alvarado Medical Center .

The $506 million project, funded in part by locally-generated TransNet sales tax dollars, is expected to generate more than 11,000 new trolley trips a day, and provide service for approximately 4,300 students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus each day.  In addition, it will attract over 2.5 million new annual transit riders in the region as a result of improved transit connectivity, and will increase transportation capacity and improve mobility within the Interstate 8 corridor.
