Crime mapping Web site is a resounding success

ARJIS logoSince its official launch July 17, use of the San Diego County Regional Crime Mapping Application for Public Safety (MAPS) has been tremendous. As a result of its success, the Automated Regional Justice Information System (ARJIS) added additional system capacity.

“We designed the system to add capacity as needed and we are able to do that quickly to respond to the demand from residents,” said Hon. Steve Padilla, SANDAG Public Safety Committee Chair and Chula Vista Mayor.

The groundbreaking MAPS Web site allows the public to conduct geographic searches by address, neighborhood, ZIP code, school, hospital, city, council district, supervisor district as well as incident type, date, time of day, and day of the week for up to one year.

Information is available on many types of crimes, arrests, traffic citations and collisions. The goal is to promote public safety and awareness.

The MAPS project stemmed from a collaboration among San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis, SANDAG, and the Automated Regional Justice Information System (ARJIS). It is unique in that it allows for the sharing of criminal justice-related information across jurisdictional boundaries and enhances interagency communication, intelligence gathering, strategic planning, homeland security and crime prevention efforts.
