Public involvement program for Regional Transportation Plan

freeway construction

An effective public involvement program is a critical component in the development of the 2007 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). SANDAG is in the midst of creating a comprehensive public involvement program – soliciting input from the Regional Planning Stakeholders Working Group (SWG), Social Services Transportation Advisory Council, Transportation Committee, and other community and regional stakeholders.

A major goal of this public involvement effort is to better reach out to non-traditional as well as traditional audiences to include them in the transportation planning process, and to create a transportation blueprint that truly meets the diverse travel needs of the region’s residents. To aid in achieving this goal, SANDAG will award grants to community-based organizations (the deadline for application was July 31, 2006) that will conduct outreach activities to secure public involvement from stakeholders in their communities, engage community-based participation in setting regional transportation priorities, and generate feedback on the RTP.

Other proposed tools for providing information on the RTP and encouraging public involvement include the SANDAG Web site, a regional public information campaign, brochures and newsletters, and regularly scheduled meetings.

You are invited to provide input on the draft public involvement program. SANDAG is soliciting feedback through September 2006. The final program will be presented to the Transportation Committee in October for approval.
