New MTS buses arrive in style for Caltrans officials and elected leaders celebrated the re-opening of the I-15/SR 56 interchange and Carmel Mountain Road bridge across I-15 on Saturday, July 28, 2007. The original bridge was replaced as part of the construction of the I-15 Managed Lanes, four lanes in the median of I-15 that will feature a moveable barrier and be used by bus rapid transit, carpools, vanpools, transit riders, and FasTrak® subscribers. Officials also unveiled new Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses that offer reclining seats, foot rests, individual reading lamps, and directional air conditioning. “This brand new bus behind me, and 26 like them, are already operating on the I-15, providing fast and direct service from all I-15 communities to downtown,” said Lemon Grove Mayor and SANDAG Chair Mary Teresa Sessom. MTS currently operates four commuter express buses on I-15 to downtown San Diego. These routes are designed especially for commuters and have no stops once they reach the freeway. The new buses are viewed as a precursor to the bus rapid transit vehicles that eventually will run along the I-15 Managed Lanes. Funded in part by the TransNet half-cent sales tax, the more than $1 billion Managed Lanes project is designed to maximize capacity, relieve congestion, and “wow” travelers. The 20-mile, state-of-the-art facility along the I-15 between SR 163 and SR 78 is scheduled for completion in 2012. Project Manager:
