Super Loop station design revealed Super Loop

On July 11, 2007, an open house was held to receive comments on the proposed Super Loop station design at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in San Diego. Twenty display boards provided information about the different aspects of the project and project team members were available to answer questions. Approximately 45 members of the public attended.

The Super Loop is a new circulator transit route planned to provide frequent, higher-speed transit service in the North University City area. Each uniquely branded Super Loop station may include a shelter, leaning rails or seating, lighting and “real time” electronic signage at some stations indicating the arrival of the next Super Loop vehicle.

Preliminary plans call for the development of up to 15 stations, an average of a half mile apart along the 7.5 mile Super Loop bus route. During peak travel times Super Loop vehicles will frequent stations every 10 to 15 minutes and will connect University Towne Centre and La Jolla Village Square shopping centers, Executive Way and Genesee Avenue office clusters, Nobel Park and the University of California, San Diego, and other destinations.

The Super Loop will feature distinctive vehicles that are smaller and more flexible than traditional transit vehicles. Vehicles will comfortably accommodate at least 25 people in seats and offer plentiful standing room for additional riders. Priority traffic treatments will allow the Super Loop vehicles to ease in and out of traffic more rapidly than traditional vehicles, providing a higher-speed alternative for motorists. Super Loop construction will begin in early 2008 and operation will begin in late 2008.

Super Loop is funded in part by TransNet, San Diego County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation projects. The project also is made possible through the efforts of SANDAG, the City of San Diego, Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, and California Department of Transportation.
