Regional Transportation Update
SANDAG Seeks Input on $42 Billion Plan

Ask anyone what the biggest problem is in San Diego, and the answer you are likely to hear is "traffic." We know we can't build our way out of traffic congestion. This leaves us at a crossroads, but the road less traveled may hold the key to how we commute in the future.

SANDAG just released its draft MOBILITY 2030 Regional Transportation Plan for public input. The $42 billion plan integrates public policy, strategies and investments to maintain, manage, and improve transportation in the region. Better connecting our freeways, transit and road networks to homes, schools, and shopping is the foundation of the MOBILITY 2030 plan.

MOBILITY 2030 recognizes the importance of integrating land use decisions with plans for expanded public transit services and an efficient roadway system. The plan calls for new and better connections for buses, trolleys, trains, and cars throughout the region as well as a flexible roadway system which can be used by public transit, and carpoolers.

For many trips, the goal of the plan is to make public transit competitive time wise with the same trip made by car by the year 2030.

Although the foundation of MOBILITY 2030 lies in better connecting our freeway, transit, and road networks, improving transportation is just one component of a larger vision to sustain and improve our region's quality of life. MOBILITY 2030 is the transportation component to SANDAG's Regional Comprehensive Plan which focuses on smart growth strategies to sustain the quality of life enjoyed by the region's residents.

MOBILITY 2030 is available for review online at www.KeepSanDiegoMoving.com. Public comments are invited on the plan and will be accepted through December 30, 2002. A public hearing is scheduled for December 6, 2002. Public Workshops are scheduled at north, south, and east county locations the week of December 9.
