Commuters' Corner
SANDAG and NCTD Launch Electronic Bike Locker Program at Three North County Coaster Stations

Now bicyclists can really help keep San Diego moving with the installation of 36 new electronic bicycle lockers at the Solana Beach, Carlsbad Poinsettia, and Oceanside Coaster stations.

The new lockers are available to bicyclists making daily commute trips. This is the first time electronic bicycle lockers have been deployed in the San Diego region.

The eLockerTM uses an electronically-secure system that provides bicycle commuters access to one of several on-demand bicycle lockers. Each commuter who participates in the program will receive a one-of-a-kind electronic key. Once the commuter's bicycle is placed in the locker and the door is shut, the locker is "secured," and only the valid key holder who last secured the locker can open it.

The new eLockers will be available to participants who enroll in SANDAG's RideLink Regional Bicycle Locker program and pay a $35 key deposit. The new on-demand lockers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. If the on-demand system proves successful, SANDAG plans to convert most of the region's bicycle lockers to electronic on-demand lockers.

"SANDAG is committed to providing San Diego's workforce with viable alternatives to their daily commute. By choosing an alternative to driving alone, like riding a bike to the Coaster station, even one day a week, commuters reduce the number of cars on San Diego's highways to help to keep San Diego moving," says Gary Gallegos, SANDAG Executive Director.

"By offering secure eLockers, we hope to provide bicycle commuters with a practical, stress-free alternative to driving to work," says Pete Aadland, of NCTD.
