Governor Schwarzenegger, through his California Regional Blueprint Planning Program, has awarded the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) with a $409,000 grant to help implement the agency’s innovative Regional Comprehensive Plan (RCP).
Sunne Wright McPeak, California’s Secretary of Business, Transportation, and Housing, was in San Diego today to make the grant award on the governor’s behalf.
“All of you in San Diego have done a terrific job and we want you to continue your work,” said Secretary McPeak. ”San Diego has been a role-model in regional strategic planning that connects transportation and land use.”
“The goal is to reduce traffic congestion, offer more housing, and provide a sustainable regional economy that creates better paying jobs,” said Gary Gallegos, SANDAG executive director. He added, “The RCP will help each of our 18 cities and the county government when they update their master plans for growth.”
The RCP is the strategic planning blueprint for the San Diego region. It provides a context in which local and regional decisions can be made that foster a healthy environment, a vibrant economy, and a high quality of life for all residents. In doing so, the RCP balances regional population, housing, and employment growth with habitat preservation, agriculture, open space, and infrastructure needs. The intended result is a sustainable future one with more choices and opportunities for all residents.
