The Urban Form chapter of the RCP defines seven categories of smart growth “place types,” ranging from “metropolitan center” to “rural village.” In addition, the RCP recommends that smart growth development be planned near existing and future transit stations, as well as other appropriate locations such as rural community village cores, which can provide a focal point for commercial and civic uses that serve surrounding rural areas.
One of the RCP’s key actions is the development of a Smart Growth Concept Map illustrating the location of existing, planned, and potential smart growth areas. Developed with input from local planning directors and SANDAG staff, the innovative map will be used in relation to two key SANDAG initiatives: updating the comprehensive 2007 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and determining eligibility for the long-term TransNet Smart Growth Incentive Program (SGIP).
A series of workshops to solicit public input on the transportation systems associated with the smart growth areas will be held in April 2006.
