San Diego named best city of bicycling

According to Bicycling Magazine, the sport’s premiere publication, San Diego is the best large city in the country for bicycling. San Diego ranked first among cities with populations greater than one million.

The magazine recognizes what many cycling enthusiasts in the region have long known: “Why: The hat trick: weather, terrain, cycling-friendly infrastructure. Must ride: Bayshore Bikeway: 24 breathtaking miles around San Diego Bay.” (Bicycling Magazine, February 2006)

To further emphasize how good bicycling can be for a community, Mayor Jerry Sanders and Councilmember Donna Frye rode on a tandem bicycle to their Saturday press conference on the award.

In addition to funding highway and transit projects, TransNet also contributes one million dollars each year to support and expand the nearly 1,000 miles of bikeways in the San Diego region. Projects are ongoing to provide access to transit, build additional bikeways, and expand the entire network for safe and convenient bicycle travel. Currently, TransNet bikeway funds are helping to build the Coastal Rail Trail that will eventually connect all the coastal cities from Oceanside to San Diego, and the Inland Rail Trail between Escondido and Oceanside. Projects of this scale are made possible by combining TransNet bicycle funds with federal transportation funds.
