Mission Valley East Trolley extension
named project of the year Mission Valley East Trolley

The Mission Valley East (MVE) Trolley extension, which stretches from Mission Valley to La Mesa via an underground tunnel at San Diego State University (SDSU), has been named Project of the Year for the State of California by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Completed in July 2005, the MVE project became part of the Metropolitan Transit System’s (MTS) new Green Line, and closed a critical, six-mile gap in the region’s public transit system. Since opening, the Green Line has succeeded in attracting new transit passengers. According to a 2005 survey, it has generated about 18,500 daily trips, 7,200 of which are by new riders. The Green Line also is relieving congestion on the roadways — diverting 4,600 trips from automobile to transit, and reducing parking demand at SDSU by 2,000 cars per day.

Twenty-five projects were submitted to the ASCE for consideration, with MVE receiving the top honor. To be eligible for consideration, each of the competing projects had to have received prior recognition at the local level. The award will be presented during a February 5, 2007, symposium in Sacramento.
