Smart Corner is all about smart growth Smart Corner

Downtown San Diego is getting a lot smarter as progress continues on the innovative Smart Corner project — a mixed-use, transit-oriented development. An event on January 24 celebrated the opening of San Diego Housing Commission’s new offices, located at Smart Corner, and commemorated the re-routing of the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Trolley through the project.

Smart Corner is a wonderful illustration of smart growth — a fundamental component of the SANDAG Regional Comprehensive Plan. Smart growth development tends to be compact, situated near existing employment, and offers convenient access to transportation choices and public facilities.

“SANDAG is proud to share in the success of Smart Corner,” said Gary Gallegos, SANDAG Executive Director. “It is immediately apparent that the Trolley does not go around or near the project — it goes through this Smart Corner. This is a smart growth landmark, and a great example of public and private partnerships at work — San Diego Housing Commission, Centre City Development Corporation, Urban Housing Partners, Lankford & Associates, MTS, SANDAG, and others — working together to improve the downtown area.”

Bordered by Park Boulevard, Eleventh Avenue, C Street, and Broadway, Smart Corner residents are just steps from a soon-to-open Trolley station that bisects the 19-story residential tower and five-story office building. The station will open for service in summer 2007. Numerous bus routes also are within walking distance.
