TransNet Update
Mission Valley East Light Rail Project

In the fall of 2000, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) broke ground for the Mission Valley East Light Rail Project. This 5.9-mile extension will help reduce traffic congestion along the I-8 corridor and is expected to attract 2.5 million new trolley riders a year.

Construction on the project is nearly complete. A tunnel, measuring approximately three-quarters of a mile, now runs under San Diego State University, and the bridgework will be completed within a few weeks. Construction activity on the underground station continues. The entire Mission Valley East Trolley Line is expected to open to riders in late 2005.

The total project cost is $496 million. Funding for the project includes, federal, state and TransNet dollars, the half-cent sales tax which pays for a variety of needed transportation projects throughout the region.
