Transportation progress continues around the region

freeway contructionEach quarter, SANDAG provides a transportation progress report to its Board of Directors and constituents to keep them apprised of the multitude of dynamic projects underway in the San Diego region. By leveraging state, federal, and local TransNet dollars, SANDAG funds transportation improvements and services designed to give commuters more choices and reduce growing traffic congestion.

The Quarterly Transportation Progress Report focuses on several project areas: Highway; Transit; Arterial and Freeway Interchange; and Traffic and Demand Management.
The third quarter of 2006 was full of transportation highlights and accomplishments:

Highway Projects:

  • Caltrans opened to traffic a northbound auxiliary lane between Scripps Poway Parkway and SR 56 and a southbound auxiliary lane between Rancho Peñasquitos Boulevard and Mercy Road. Completion of this improvement project was advanced to relieve congestion at this bottleneck.

  • The California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved adding $30 million in new interregional STIP funds to the SR 905 freeway project. Caltrans estimates construction will begin in early 2007.

Transit Projects:

  • The City of Oceanside and the North County Transit District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 29 for the opening of the 450-space Oceanside Transit Center Parking Structure.

  • The CTC approved $6 million in new STIP funding for the Solana Beach Transit Center Parking structure. This project is currently in design and is anticipated to begin construction in late FY 2007.

Arterial and Freeway Interchange Projects:

  • The City of San Diego awarded the construction contract for the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard/SR 163 Interchange. This project will widen the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard bridge over SR 163, widen ramps, and improve general circulation in this area. This project is scheduled for completion in late 2007.

  • The City of San Marcos held a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 18 for the opening of the Las Posas Road/SR 78 Interchange. This $23.5 million project opened ahead of schedule and will relieve some of the congestion on interchanges.

Traffic and Demand Management:

  • The Freeway Service Patrol assisted approximately 13,400 motorists, about six percent more than last quarter. Vanpool participation grew four percent in the last quarter, from 474 to 495 vanpools. Overall, 4,179 daily commuters participate in the program.

These activities are visually represented in an informative PowerPoint presentation.
