SANDAG projects receive awards SANDAG smart growth planning efforts and tribal government coordination recently have been recognized by the San Diego Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) and the San Diego/Tijuana chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). San Diego’s Smart Growth Concept Map was the recipient of the local APA chapter “Best Practice Award.” In 2006, the SANDAG Board of Directors accepted the first-ever Smart Growth Concept Map in the San Diego region. The Concept Map is a key element to successfully implementing the RCP, as it identifies locations within the region that can support smart growth and transportation investments. “The Smart Growth Concept Map has been the collaborative work of numerous stakeholders in the region,” explained Lori Holt Pfeiler, Chair of the SANDAG Regional Planning Committee and Mayor of Escondidio. “The map identifies 200 areas that can support smart growth, and is a key stepping stone toward the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Plan.” SANDAG and the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association (SCTCA) also were recognized by the local APA with a “Social Change and Diversity Award” for their work to develop a “Tribal Government-to-Government Framework.” SANDAG and the SCTCA developed a regional government-to-government framework for addressing planning issues of mutual concern and the SCTCA now serves as an advisory member on the SANDAG Board of Directors and Policy Advisory Committees (Transportation, Regional Planning, Public Safety, and Borders). Tribal leaders are now part of the regional decision-making process at a policy level, offering a tribal perspective to complex regional issues. SANDAG also received a “Leadership and Service” award recognizing the agency for its work to implement the RCP. Among many initiatives underway since the RCP was adopted in 2004 are the Smart Growth Concept Map, Regional Housing Needs Assessment, Smart Growth Incentive Program, and the TransNet Environmental Mitigation Program. In addition, the ULI presented its Smart Growth Awards to recognize mixed-use and transit-oriented development and the people responsible for them. SANDAG was recognized by the ULI with the “Best Framework for Smart Growth Award” for the Smart Growth Concept Map. Project manager:
