SANDAG Makes the Grade with Latest Transportation Progress Report

In May, SANDAG released its quarterly transportation progress report. This document summarizes the current status of major highway, transit, arterial, traffic management, and transportation demand management projects in SANDAG's five-year Regional Transportation Improvement Program for January-March 2005. The TransNet one-half cent local sales tax and other local, state, and federal sources fund these projects.

Highway Projects:

Caltrans completed the I-15 widening between Friars Road and Interstate 8, and opened to traffic a southbound auxiliary lane between the I-15/SR 56 interchange and Rancho Peñasquitos Boulevard . The I-15/SR 56 to Mercy Road Widening project will be completed by December 2006.

Transit and Bikeway Projects:

Phase 1 of the Coastal Rail Trail – Oceanside Segment, which runs from Vista Way to Buccaneer Park , is now open. Other sections of the Coastal Rail Trail are currently in design, and the last segment, located in the City of San Diego , is scheduled for completion in 2008.

Traffic and Demand Management:

Transportation Demand Management programs reduced an estimated 68,200 pounds of smog-forming air pollution during the third quarter of FY 2005, an increase of 28 percent over last year.

Freeway Service Patrol:

The Freeway Service Patrol assisted approximately 13,000 motorists during the third quarter of FY 2005. SANDAG currently contracts with local tow operators to provide roving tow service on 204 miles of the region's busiest freeways, including portions of Interstates 5, 8, 15 and 805, and State Routes 52, 54, 78, 94, 125, and 163.

Vanpools:

Vanpool participation grew 59 percent in the last year, from 264 vanpools to 420 vanpools. The average ridership per vanpool was nine passengers.
