NCTD prepares to implement fare changes

COASTEROn Thursday, May 18, 2006, the North County Transit District (NCTD) Board of Directors recommended to the SANDAG Transportation Committee that fare increases be implemented in its service area to help balance the FY 2007 NCTD operating budget. A joint public hearing between the NCTD Board and the SANDAG Transportation Committee also was held.

The proposal would increase BREEZE and FAST cash fares by $0.25. Day Passes would increase from $0.25 for adults and $0.50 for seniors; LIFT fares would increase $0.50; and special event fares would increase $1.00. Increases to COASTER train ticket fares and monthly passes would range from 4 percent to 14 percent depending on travel zone and type of fare.Monthly BREEZE passes, Senior Passes, College Passes, and Regional Passes would not be changed.Fares and transfers with MTS are not affected.

At the end of the public hearing, the SANDAG Transportation Committee took action to recommend that the SANDAG Board of Directors amend the Comprehensive Fare Ordinance to reflect the proposed new NCTD fares. The SANDAG Board of Directors will take a final vote to amend the Comprehensive Fare Ordinance with these changes on Friday, June 9, 2006. If approved, changes could be implemented as soon as July 1, 2006. More information regarding the proposed increases is available on the SANDAG Web site under Notices.
