SANDAG receives $450,000 from Smart Growth
California Energy Commission

The California Energy Commission (CEC) recently awarded $450,000 to SANDAG to develop analytical tools and research that focus on the relationship between land use, transportation, and energy planning.

The CEC considers “smart growth” to be the most significant opportunity to meet California’s energy and climate change goals.

A one-year $50,000 “Rebuild America” grant will enable SANDAG to update the Regional Energy Strategy (RES) to promote energy efficient design of new nonresidential buildings, as recommended under the U.S. Department of Energy Rebuild America program. The Rebuild America program is a network of community-based partnerships across the nation that are committed to saving energy, improving building performance, easing air pollution through reduced energy demand, and enhancing the quality of life through energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

A two-year $400,000 energy planning contract will assist SANDAG in carrying out other tasks to update the RES, assist member agencies to participate in energy efficiency programs, and enable SANDAG to conduct an alternative fuel vehicle and infrastructure assessment for the region. The work effort will contribute to state energy planning through the CEC Integrated Energy Policy Report process. The SANDAG Energy Working Group will serve as the local advisory committee to this CEC partnership. Updates will be provided to the SANDAG Regional Planning Committee and the SANDAG Board of Directors, and input from other working groups will be solicited over the course of this partnership.
