SANDAG’s Public Safety Committee (PSC) has been launched to advise the SANDAG Board of Directors on major policy-level matters related to public safety. The committee was established as part of the ARJIS/SANDAG consolidation and the revised Joint Powers Agreement (JPA). The inaugural meeting was held March 12.
This committee joins four other policy committees: Executive, Transportation, Borders, and Regional Planning. PSC members include six voting SANDAG board members and five voting public safety members as well as four public safety advisory members. Chula Vista Mayor Steve Padilla is the Chair of the committee. Encinitas Councilmember Christy Guerin serves as the committee’s vice chair.
The Chiefs’/Sheriff’s Management Committee (CSMC), which supported the ARJIS Board, will continue to meet and will report to the PSC. The CSMC is composed of representatives from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. This group has a number of important functions that include fostering regional collaboration in the acquisition, maintenance, and sharing of public safety technology and information; reviewing, evaluating, and providing preliminary approval of the ARJIS and Criminal Justice annual work plan and budget; and evaluating and overseeing their implementation.
Four working groups will support the CSMC. Crime Analysis. The functions of the Crime Analysis Working Group include verifying and validating public safety regional data and ensuring agencies meet mandated DOJ/FBI reporting requirements. Technical. The functions of the Technical Working Group include reviewing and evaluating new technologies that enhance both officer and public safety. Business. The Business Working Group provides recommendations on financial and budget issues related to ARJIS. Users. The Users Working Group provides operational input on the functionality of technology initiatives and information sharing.
The Public Safety Committee usually meets the second Friday of every month.
