Celebrate Bike to Work Day On Friday, May 16, 2008, help cut traffic congestion and save money by getting out of your car and onto your bike for Bike to Work Day 2008. Sponsored by SANDAG and presented by San Diego County Credit Union as part of California Bike Commute Week, Bike to Work Day 2008 is expected to draw at least 5,000 participants countywide. “Bicycling to work is an attractive money-saving alternative to commuting by automobile,” says Gary Gallegos, SANDAG Executive Director. “Bicycling just one day can save enough money in gas and wear and tear on your car to treat yourself to lunch!“ Commuter bicyclists will enjoy free snacks and other refreshments at more than 40 pit stops at convenient locations throughout the county. Registered Bike to Work Day participants also will have a chance to win prizes such as a commuter-style bicycle, REI gift certificates, Zoo/Wild Animal Park passes, and Bike to Work Day t-shirts. Bike to Work Day 2008 promotes biking as a safe and effective commute option that reduces congestion on the region’s busiest roadways. It also recognizes the cost-effective, physical, and environmental benefits of choosing a bike over a car for transportation to work. For commuting distances of five miles or less, bicycling may actually take less time than driving and finding parking.
