REDI mapping application relaunched REDI

SANDAG has relaunched the Regional Economic Development Information (REDI) program following an extensive technological retooling to improve the popular database application. REDI is available free on the SANDAG Web site and allows users to create custom maps with data overlays to assist in everything from report writing to real estate transactions.

“For years, REDI was one of the most popular Web applications SANDAG provided, particularly with business people,” said Kurt Kroninger, Director of Technical Services. “We have rebuilt the software platform and now it’s back, it’s faster, and we will continue to improve it.”

REDI is an interactive program developed by SANDAG in cooperation with San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS). Users choose a base map (plain, terrain, or photographic), then overlay it with thematic information such as land use or public ownership, as well as reference information such as parcel boundaries, traffic volumes, watersheds, and many others.

Users can access characteristics about individual parcels, as well as generate basic demographic reports using a particular point as the center of a circle overlaid on the map. Once a map is created, the user can print it out.

First created in 1998, REDI was taken down in July of 2007. At the time, it was a popular feature on the SANDAG Web site, with about 700 visitors a month using the application. The new version went live on June 1. All members of the public are welcome to use it free at: http://redi.sandag.org/

SANDAG staff will continue to improve the application in the coming months, including adding an employment lands layer, adding a feature to zoom to a scale specified by the user, and possibly including more detailed demographics data.
